Effect of Storage Temperature on Changes in Carbohydrate and Endogenous Hormones in Garlic Bulbs

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to find out the effect of storage temperature: low temperature(0¡­5¡É for 60days), alternate temperature(30¡­35¡É for 30days followed by 0¡­5¡É for 30days), high temperature(30¡­35¡É for 60days constant) and room temperature (20¡­22¡É constant), on the carbohydrate and endogenous hormone changes in northern and southern ecotype garlic(Allium sativum L.) in Cheju.
The results are summerized as follows;
1) In both ecotypes of garlic, the contents of auxin, gibberellin and cytokinin were higher than others treatments when stored at low temperature for 30 days and further increased as storage period doubled or tripled.
2) Both ecotypes had almost same amount of ABA after 30 days of storage. However, as storage period doubled ,or tripled, the ABA content were higher under high temperature storage in case of the southern type, and decreased under alternate temperature storage in case of the northern type.
3) Carbohydrate content of cloves increased until the middle storage period (early August), but declined since on Sept. 10.
4) Fructose content was higher in the northern type than in the southern type. It was low in the beginning but increased as storage progressed. In both ecotypes, sucrose content was higher when stored at low temperature, but decreased as storage progressed.
